Be compliant, not complacent
Duties of the employer according to the OHS Act.
Employees should be considered as your organization's most important asset; they are your first customers and the face of the company. Just as you aim to meet the needs of your customers, you must meet the needs of your employees. Every employee has the right to a safe working environment. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) addresses this in detail, explicitly in Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Employers are obliged to take all reasonable and practicable measures to ensure that they provide a safe working environment for all employees. The government places this squarely on the shoulders of management, however, employees are also bound to comply with certain legal prescriptions.

It is the duty of every employee to take responsibility for the health and safety of himself as well as other employees, by cooperating with the employer’s workplace procedures, as described in Section 14 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Other persons may include contractors, visitors, and the public.
In summary Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act states that:
There must be provisions and maintenance for a safe and hazard-free systems of work, plant and machinery.
Eliminate or mitigate any hazard or potential hazard.
Ensure the safety of employees and absence of risks to their health in connection with the production, processing, use, storage or transportation of articles or substances.
Determine the risks to the health or safety of persons relating to any work that is performed; establish what precautionary measures should be taken to protect the health and safety of persons; and provide the necessary means to apply such precautionary measures.
Provide the necessary information, instructions, training and supervision.
Do not permit any employee to do any form of work or to operate any plant or machinery, unless the precautionary measures contemplated above, or any other precautionary measures have been taken.
Take all necessary measures to ensure that the provisions of this Act are complied with.
Enforce such measures.
Ensure that all work is performed under the general supervision of a person trained to ensure that precautionary measures taken by the employer are implemented.
Inform employees regarding section 37(1) (Acts or omissions by employee or mandataries).
